Science
The Blessed Hugh Faringdon Science Department is committed to providing a high-quality Science education, setting the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils will be able to recognise the power of rational explanation using evidence and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will understand how Science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. At the conclusion of their school career, our students will be capable of applying their scientific knowledge to contemporary issues, making connections between scientific disciplines, and pursuing post-secondary education or careers in the fields of science and engineering.
Our aim in Science is to deliver a high-quality Science education that provides pupils with the foundations for understanding the world through specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes, and uses of science. Over the course of Key Stage 3, pupils will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
At Key Stage 3, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes, and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
The aim of our GCSE curriculum is to build upon the foundation of Scientific knowledge developed through the KS3 curriculum to ensure success for all in AQA GCSE Science.
At Key Stage 4, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes, and methods of science, through different types of scientific enquiry that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- develop and learn to apply observational, practical, modelling, enquiry, problem-solving skills, and mathematical skills, both in the laboratory, in the field and in other environments
- develop their ability to evaluate claims based on science through critical analysis of the methodology, evidence, and conclusions, both qualitatively and quantitatively
