Mathematics
"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas." — Albert Einstein
The aims and objectives of the Mathematics curriculum are to enable students to:
- develop fluency
- reason mathematically
- solve problems
The Maths curriculum is underpinned by the following key mathematical themes:
- number
- algebra
- ratio, proportion and rates of change
- geometry and measures
- probability
- statistics
Mathematics is an essential subject enabling us to solve many important and intriguing problems. A high-quality Mathematics education can support students in further study in many disciplines, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Economics. However, Mathematics is also a fascinating and varied subject in its own right.
Within mathematics at Blessed Hugh Faringdon, students will learn to work fluently, to reason mathematically and to solve problems. The Mathematics Department makes use of a range of resources and teaching activities to support all students. The curriculum is based on mastery where pupils spend more time on the topics being studied. They explore concepts using objects, conversations and problem-solving to build confidence in their understanding.
The GCSE Mathematics course extends the mathematics learnt in Key Stage 3. There is an increased emphasis on applications and functionality. The Course is examined with three equally weighted examinations at the end of the course. There is no controlled assessment or coursework. Alongside GCSE Mathematics, select students work towards the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) in Statistics (1ST0). The specification being followed is Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics (1MA1).
